BH Airport
BH Airport is a consortium integrated by the CCR and the Zürich Airport Group. It is responsible for efficiently managing the growing number of passengers at the International Airport of Belo Horizonte (more than 10,6 million users in 2018).
As a member of Reciclo’s design team (the agency responsible for BH Airport advertise pieces), I was in charge of almost 130 screens (desktop and mobile devices) for the client’s new website. And a few social media campaigns as well.
The problem
The airport’s former website was outdated. The contents were presented in a confusing way, which made it hard to access information about flights, lines, contacts, and forms. To mitigate these problems, the agency’s team redesigned this product.

The process
The new wireframes were available online and with them in mind, I started searching for references on other websites from airports around the world and awarded digital projects. When chasing references I was mainly aware of aspects such as buttons, symmetrical grids, icons, font sizes, picture layout, and usability solutions.
After having the references established, I developed the graphic design for the Home Page and uploaded it at InVision. With the proposal approved by the client, I then started designing the most important screens of each menu session and the internal ones next.

The solution
The layouts developed sought to raise users’ access to relevant information. To provide that, I made the extensive text content more pleasant to read by applying infographics, different typography weights, colors, and photos to it. I also improved the website scannability and reached a more user-friendly layout, making the navigation objective and obvious.
As this project took place within an advertising agency, I was mainly in charge of the visual part, which might have affected the user experience and usability. Enough contact between developers, customers, and designers would have solved this issue.

The outcome
Even with all the difficulties mentioned, the new BH Airport’s website is one of the best airport websites in the country. It has been facilitating access to information and providing facilities to passengers from all over the world.
With this experience, I learned that 1) easy contact between all professionals involved in a project is fundamental; 2) most advertising agencies in Belo Horizonte are developing digital projects in an archaic manner, and 3) unfortunately, theory sometimes has nothing to do with market practice and yet, we need to supply enough great results.
